At about the 8th inning I started to get the feeling that; I had seen this movie before.....and I knew the ending.....and it wasn't going to be a good one. The Mets were 1 strike away from winning back to back road games for the 1st time in almost a year. Then K-Rod gave up an RBI single to David Eckstein.
Johan Santana did not have his 'good stuff' tonight, but he was effective enough to battle through 7 shutout innings. He hasn't allowed a run in his last 2 starts (15 innings). Despite his 0.00 ERA in these last 2 games, he has nothing to show for it. In fact, the Mets have lost both games. He must be ready to pull his hair out at this point.
Slick Hits:
- Santana battled through 7 scoreless innings, throwing 123 pitches
- Jeff Fancoeur had the only RBI for the Mets
- Jason Bay had 1/2 of the Mets hits tonight (3)
- K-Rod came on for a 4 out save, but blew the save on a 2 out, 2 strike single by David Eckstein
- Valdes came in and looked terrible again, loading the bases and giving up the game ending Grand Slam to Adrian Gonzalez.
The Mets have tomorrow off, then open a home stand against the Florida Marlins Friday night at Citi Field. If they want to stay in the race, and are going to continue to play poorly on the road, the Mets have to continue their dominance at Citi.
On a side note, as bad of a loss as this was, no Mets fan can feel as bad as Jimmy Joyce tonight. For those of you that don't know, Joyce blew a call at 1st base with a perfect game on the line. Expect a lot of talk tomorrow about expanding instant replay in MLB tomorrow.
