Post Game Wrap up: Tigers defeat Mets 6-5

Last night, the Mets lost their bid for another interleague sweep, falling to the Detroit Tigers 6-5. The Mets fell behind early 6-1 as Hisanori Takahashi was not good. He went only 4+ innings and allowed 6 earned runs. This poor start and length really hampered the Mets, who were a bit short in the bullpen after recalling Josh Thole C and optioning Raul Valdes RP. The Mets recalled Thole because of concerns about Rod Barajas' back tightness.

Slick Hits
- Jesus Feliciano got the start in CF for Angel Pagan and had a good night at the plate, going 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored.
- David Wright was 2 for 4, but struck out in a big spot in the 7th. Wright came to the plate with the bases loaded with 1 out, down by a run. David failed to put the ball in play to score the tying run.
- David Wright, Ike Davis, Jason Bay, and Chris Carter each collected 1 RBI in the game
- The Mets bullpen worked overtime, but pitched 5 scoreless innings. Bobby Parnell had 3 strikeouts in his one inning of work.

While I'm disappointed they didn't get the sweep, I'm still happy to see them win another series at home. The Mets continue their homestand this weekend, welcoming in the Minnesota Twins tonight at Citi Field at 7:10pm

Pre Game: Tigers @ Mets 7:10pm 6/24/10

Tonight at Citi Field, the Mets look to complete their 3rd interleague sweep of 2010 as they take on the Detroit Tigers in the last game of their 3 game series. The Mets have won the first 2 games of this series by a combined score of 19-6. Jose Reyes looks to stay hot for the Mets, coming off of his 3 hit game last night. Angel Pagan will get the day off to rest due to the muscle spasms that forced him out of last night's game.

Pitching for the Mets tonight is Hisanori Takahashi RHP (6-2, 3.13 era) and pitching for the Tigers will be Armando Galarraga RHP (2-1, 3.32 era). Takahashi went 6 scoreless innings en route to the win against the Yankees last Friday night. Galarraga, the pitcher of the 'imperfect game', allowed 4 earned runs in 4.1 innings in a no decision against the Diamondbacks.

Tonight's Lineup:
Reyes SS
Feliciano CF
Wright 3B
Davis 1B
Bay LF
Francoeur RF
Blanco C
Tejada 2B
Takahashi P

I was surprised to see Cora and Barajas out of the lineup today. I'm glad that Jerry is sticking with Tejada, even though the Mets have had 3 righties in a row. The youngster seems to have found his swing again and his defense is remarkable.

Post Game Wrap up - Mets Win 5-0!!

Another home game, another win for the Amazins. The New York Mets defeated the Detroit Tigers tonight by a score of 5-0. The Mets win combined with the Braves loss, pulled the Mets to within 1/2 a game of the NL East lead. The Mets got a superb pitching effort from R.A. Dickey tonight, as he went 8.0 innings, allowing 4 hits and no runs. Jose Reyes was the engine again for the Mets offense, giving them an early lead and coming a double short of the cycle.

Slick Hits
- Reyes is on fire, as he went 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI (solo HR)
- Ike Davis was 2 for 4 with a big 2 RBI hit in the 7th to break the game open
- Angel Pagan left the game for a pinch hitter in the 7th because of muscle spasms. He is expected to have tomorrow off, but the prognosis is that he should be back Friday.
- Dickey was great and probably wanted to go out for the 9th. However, Jerry Manuel felt KRod needed work, so he came on for a fairly stress free 9th inning.

The Mets continue to play well at home and keep winning. They are now 11 games over .500 and look for the sweep of the Tigers tomorrow night at Citi. Dickey has been unbelievable as he improved his record to 6-0 and lowered his ERA to 2.33. What a pleasant surprise.

Pre Game: Tigers @ Mets 7:10pm 6/23/10

I'll be leaving shortly to sit in traffic on my way to Citi Field for game 2 of the series vs. the Tigers. Thus, the early Pre Game.

After last night's offensive explosion, the Mets look to win another interleague series with R.A. Dickey RHP (5-0 2.82 era) on the mound tonight. Dickey went 6.0 innings, allowing 2 earned runs and picking up the win last week, in Cleveland. Opposing Dickey will be Jeremy Bonderman RHP (3-4, 4.06 era). Against the Nationals last week, Bonderman allowed 2 earned runs over 7.0 innings to get the win.

With their win last night, the Mets again moved to 10 games over .500. The look to move to 11 games over and continue to creep closer to the Atlanta Braves for 1st place in the NL East.

Here's tonight's lineup:
Reyes SS
Pagan CF
Wright 3B
Davis 1B
Bay LF
Francoeur RF
Blanco C
Tejada 2B
Dickey P

Post Game Wrap up - Mets Win 14-6!!

Well, the Mets started their 6 game home stand with a bang. The Mets throttled the Tigers tonight by a score of 14-6. The Mets got on the board early with RBIs by Angel Pagan (triple) and David Wright (sac fly). Jonathon Niese started the game for the Mets and did not allow a hit for the first three innings of work. The game had a 58 minute rain delay in the 3rd inning, which led to Justin Verlander being pulled from the game. His line for the night....not good, going 2+ innings and being charged with 5 earned runs. Niese would come out for the 4th and 5th innings, but struggled mightily.

Slick Hits
The Mets tired out the official scorer tonight:
- Jose Reyes was 3 for 6 with an RBI and 3 runs scored.
- Angel Pagan went 4 for 6 with 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored. He was a homer shy of the cycle, as Gary Cohen repeated about 27 times during the broadcast.
- David Wright was 3 for 3 with 2 RBIs, while Jason Bay added 2 RBIs.
- Ike Davis went 3 for 6 with 3 RBIs.
- Every starting position player for the Metropolitan had at least 1 RBI except for Rod Barajas.
- Niese was a different pitcher after the rain delay, allowing 6 runs total over 4.2 innings.

This game was a great way to start the home stand. I would have liked to have seen Niese make it through the 5th to get the victory, but he just had nothing following the rain delay. Between the rain delay and the Mets big inning, Niese went about 1.5 hours between throwing live pitches. I'll be at the game tomorrow night, be sure to keep an eye on twitter as I'll be tweeting throughout the game @citislickblog

Minaya: Beltran to start minor leage rehab Thursday

Earlier this afternoon, Omar Minaya spoke with reporters and said that Carlos Beltran would be starting his minor league rehab assignment on Thursday. If all goes well, he could be back with the team, just after the All Star Break. For the full story, check out MetsBlog.com here .

While this sounds like the best news we could have expected today, I will remain cautiously optimistic until I see #15 in center field at Citi Field. I wish Carlos the best in his minor league assignment and hope he can rejoin the team sooner rather than later.

Pre Game: Tigers @ Mets 7:10pm 6/22/10

Tonight at 7:10 pm the Mets welcome in the Detroit Tigers to Citi Field. The Mets are coming off an impressive 7-2 road trip and look to continue their great play at home. The Tigers (38-30) have won 8 of their last 10, as have the Mets.

There is a decent chance for rain tonight. The forcast calls for a 50%-75% chance of rain after 8pm. So if you are headed to the game, take an umbrella!

NL East Preview: The Week ahead 6/21-6/27

The Atlanta Braves are alone atop the standings of the NL East. Why? Because they are hot and have won 5 in a row. Here is a look at the standings as of this morning:

Atlanta Braves - 42-38 0.0 GB
New York Mets - 39-30 2.5 GB
Phil. Phillies - 35-32 5.5 GB
Florida Marlins - 33-36 8.5 GB
Wash. Nationals- 31-39 11.0 GB

Atlanta Braves
The first place Braves have won 7 of 8 and are headed on the road to take on the Chicago White Sox in a 3 game series, starting tomorrow night. The Braves road trip is a short one, as they quickly return home for a 3 game set with the Detroit Tigers over the weekend.

New York Mets
The Mets finished up their 9 game road trip, going 7-2, a very respectible record. The Mets currently lead the wild card race, and trail the Braves by 2.5 in the division race. The Mets now head home for a 6 game homestand. The Mets welcome in the Detroit Tigers tomorrow night for a 3 game series, then host the Twins for a 3 game set over the weekend.

Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies seemed to have some momentum after leaving the Bronx winning 2 of 3 from the Yankees. However, after winning the Friday night opener with the Twins, they blew a 4 run lead on Saturday and lost the rubber game yesterday. The Phillies are home for a 3 game set with the Indians. The Phillies will have the back end of their rotation going in this series (Moyer, Kendrick, and Blanton). The Phils then to....well they stay home to play @ Toronto. Sounds crazy, but the Phillies will play the Blue Jays at Citizens Bank Park in a series that will have Toronto as the home team and the DH rule in effect. The series was moved to Philly because of the G20 summit in Toronto. It's a joke that this series was moved to the Phillies park. Frankly, it' just unfair to other teams in the NL. Why not play at a neutral site?

Florida Marlins
The Marlins were near the top of the standings, not so long ago. However, they have dropped 4 of their last 6. They look to regroup as they head to Baltimore to start a 3 game set with the Orioles tomorrow night. The Marlins then head home to take on the San Diego Padres for a 3 game set over the weekend.

Washington Nationals
Like the Marlins, the Nationals were also near the top of the standings a short while ago. They have been terrible of late, losing 8 of their last 9 ballgames. The Nats look to rebound as they open a 3 game home series against the Kansas City Royals tomorrow night. The Nats then take to the road for a 3 game set in Baltimore to take on the Orioles this weekend.

Out of the 3 top teams in the East, it looks like the Phillies have the easiest upcoming schedule, especially if you consider their extra home series. The Mets need to continue playing well at home and try to maintain a record of at least 10 games over .500. The Braves might be in for a tough week, hopefully the Mets can take advantage.

Monday News and Notes

Jenrry Mejia Sent down
In a move that many Mets fans have been hoping and waiting for, Jenrry Mejia has been sent down to AA Binghampton to resume his work on eventually becoming a starter. The corresponding roster move will be for the Mets to call up Bobby Parnell and add him to the bullpen.

It took waaaay too long for this to happen, but I'm glad that if finally did!

John Maine update
John Maine has been on a rehab assignment in the minors. However, it seems as though his arm is still an issue (or a way for the Mets to keep him out of the rotation). He will visit the doctor again today to have his arm rexamined. Omar Minaya even said that they may shut Maine down for a while to rest. The Mets are in a tough spot because they don't really have a spot for him in the rotation, unless they want to move Takahashi to the bullpen. Certainly Dickey is not a candidate as he is currently 5-0 and pitchign well. Stay tuned

All Star Game
Be sure to vote for your favorite Mets in the All Star Voting. As of late last week, David Wright (12 HRs, 53 RBIs, .283 BA) trailed Placido Polanco (5 HRs, 25 RBIs, .313 BA) for the starting 3B spot. Do NOT let an inferior Phillies player beat out #5. Go here to vote for D Wright.

Post Game Wrap up - Mets lose 4-0

The Mets completed their 9 game road trip with consecutive losses to the New York Yankees, as they dropped the rubber game today 4-0. Overall, it was a successful road trip, as the Mets went 7-2. They currently sit 2.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves, who have won 5 straight.

Slick Hits
- Johan Santana did not have his best 'stuff' today. The only damage, however, came on a grand slam by Mark Teixeira.
- The Mets didn't hit very much today, as they could manage on 4 hits off of Sabathia, who went 8.0 shutout innings before a brief rain delay.
- The Subway Series ended up 3-3 for 2010.

The Mets are off tomorrow, but will start a 6 game home stand Tuesday night against the Detroit Tigers.

If you told me before the road trip started that the Mets would go 7-2, I would've taken it. It was just disappointing to lose the series to the Yankees after winning the first game and having Big Pelf and Santana for the 2nd and 3rd games. Back home and time to start another winning streak!

Post Game Wrap Up: Yankees win 5-3

The Mets winning streak finally came to an end on Saturday, as they fell to the Yankees 5-3.

Mike Pelfrey did not have a good day on the mound, as he allowed 5 runs over 7 innings of work. He allowed Home Runs to Curtis Granderson and Mark "Time share A".

The Mets offense was provided by one man, Jose Reyes. Reyes had 2 home runs, a solo and a 2 run shot.

The Mets look to take the rubber game today at 1 as Johan Santana (5-3) takes on CC Sabathia (7-3).
